I think that a lot of your music has played with idea about a place something could have in your heart, the physical place itself, and the way that those interact. “Circles Around This Town” definitely captures that love for Nashville, both as a literal place that you do drive in and as an idea. But yeah, there’s a lot of great ones in there that I need to practice what I preach with. ![]() So I love that suggestion to do things that you wouldn’t normally do in the place that you see every day just to rediscover your love for it. There’s a couple, but I really like “Live like a tourist in your hometown.” In Nashville, I’ve lived here for almost 10 years, and it’s changed so much but I still am discovering things about it. By turning them into a quest, you’re saying that humility isn’t just a thing you say, it’s a thing that you have to keep on proving. That’s why I was really fascinated by the Spotify tarot cards and the really simple actions on them. We can be confident in what we do but, at the same time, down to earth and ego-checked. I think that’s part of being human is that we’re very nuanced and complicated. Can those two things coexist? I think they can. It was just me grappling with some identity things and wondering if you can be self-assured and confident and at the same time be humble. That’s how the song “Humble Quest” came into existence. But do I think I am? That’s the most important person to listen to. So I was starting to wonder after what I’ve achieved in two records, am I still down to earth? Some people think I’m not. We’re just so exposed to our own criticisms in social media and all of that. Maren Morris: It fascinated me that I had such a complicated relationship with that word, and I wanted to dive deeper into why.
